This 27-minute video includes stories by well-known people, Kathy Cronkite and Rod Steiger. It is part of a campaign by the Carter Centre Mental Health Task Force which hopes to reduce the stigma of mental illness and the discrimination against people with mental illness.

It includes three stories -youth, adult, senior - by people who live with a mental illness and who have found their church and their faith to be significant for their spiritual journeys as well as some input by a pastor who has struggled with depression sharing steps congregations can take to be those kinds of nurturing communities.

Honest Talk About Serious Mental Illness

This 35-minute video aims at helping youth groups discuss openly the seriousness of mental illness. It has four segments and comes with discussion questions. There is a leaders’ guide for four Sunday school lessons for youth with the same title and also put out by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). The book and videos can be used independently of each other.

This 33-minute video was produced by Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital in Edmonton. It includes parts of stories by children and youth about their experiences with schizophrenia as well as parts of stories by parents of children and youth who have schizophrenia.

Journey Toward Wholeness

This is a six-session video series that seeks to promote good mental and spiritual health while at the same time using what modern medicine offers. The series comes with a book and a leader’s guide and is suitable for Sunday school or other small group. Titles of the six sessions are: Introduction, Creating Space, Articulating, Forgiveness, Integrity and Letting Go, and Living the Empowered Life.

This two video series is a teaching tool for adult Sunday school or small group study on topics pertaining to mental health and mental illness and the church. Each of the ten twenty minute segments is a talk given by Dr. John Toews, a Canadian Mennonite psychiatrist. Discussion questions to follow the presentation are included. Total running time is 200 minutes.

Pathways To Understanding

This video contains narratives by eleven people who talk about mental illness. Some of the speakers come from the Jewish tradition and others from a Christian tradition. The speakers are pastors, people who have a mental illness and family members. The video is intended to help church leaders, especially pastors and seminary students, to understand the issues around mental illness and the church and to suggest appropriate responses. It is also possible to use some of the narratives as part of a Sunday school series on mental illness or for training of caregivers who are interested in learning more about mental illness and how to support people who struggle with it. 56 minutes. A resource manual from Pathways is also available.

Reaching Out

This 22-minute video is produced by the British Columbia Schizophrenia Society and is geared to youth and people working with youth. It stresses the importance of recognizing schizophrenia at its early stages and getting help quickly. Youth leaders, parents and youth would benefit by viewing this video so they are aware of symptoms and where to look for help in the event that a youth from within their church or home shows symptoms of schizophrenia.
