Local Programs Volunteer OpportunitiesAbuse Prevention Program Volunteer Facilitator This program offers 10 week support groups for women who are experiencing abuse in their intimate relationship. A volunteer can become a facilitator of these groups after taking a twelve hour training (Unit I and Unit II) on Understanding Abuse in Relationships. This training is offered annually, and the lead trainer is Karen McAndless-Davis, co-author of the book 'When Love Hurts', which is used in the support group. After taking Unit I and Unit II training, the volunteer participates in a support group primarily as an observer (Unit III), and in a subsequent group as a co-facilitator (Unit IV), after which the volunteer is considered to be trained to offer the support group as a facilitator. Volunteer Facilitators will be mentored and supported through the Abuse Prevention Program of MCC BC.
Volunteer Receptionist The volunteer receptionist is the first point of contact at the MCC Employment Centre and provides support to the Office Coordinator and staff. The volunteer receptionist will answer incoming calls and direct them as required, welcome participants and visitors to the centre, provide correct and professional information on ECD activities, and perform office tasks (e.g. word processing, faxing, photocopying, and filing). This position can be part-time or full-time; hours are negotiable. Orientation and support is provided by the Office Coordinator.
Volunteer Drivers Volunteer drivers provide transportation to a person living with HIV/AIDS within the local communities of Abbotsford, Mission or Chilliwack, based on the volunteer's preference. The majority of people living with HIV/AIDS do not have access to a vehicle. Drivers are needed to help people get to medical appointments, the local food bank or grocery store, and support group meetings. The volunteer can specify days or hours available. Training on HIV/AIDS and support is provided by the MCC HIV/AIDS Program Coordinator.
This program provides a support group to people living with HIV/AIDS, caregivers and family members. This volunteer will co-facilitate with the HIV/AIDS Coordinator. A volunteer can become a co-facilitator in the support group after receiving training on HIV/AIDS, and participating in the group as a supportive and active listener for a 3 month period to determine appropriate fit for this position. Basic facilitation skills are required. The Volunteer Co-Facilitator will be mentored and supported through the HIV/AIDS Program of MCC BC.
