HIV/AIDS MCC Services and Initiatives

The church has been called to demonstrate Christ's compassion and acceptance by touching the lives of those who society deems untouchable and loving those who are seen as unlovable. We have a unique opportunity to respond to one of the most relevant and devastating social issues of our time, HIV/AIDS.

Support Group for persons living with HIV/AIDS

Our support group meets twice a month and is a support group for people living with HIV/AIDS. The group is facilitated by a MCC staff member, and is open to anyone who is HIV positive and wanting this kind of support. We are currently the only support group in the Fraser East health region for persons living with HIV/AIDS.

The support group offers a safe place for individuals to be educated in the various aspects of living with a life-defining illness as well as a place to share their questions, concerns and fears. The group has become a place where people are able to learn to embrace life and learn ways to live in the midst of their pain, suffering and the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS. There have been many causes for celebration as people have experienced improved health, returned to work and some have gotten married. For those who have an interest, there are opportunities for faith discussions, and some have found faith in God and a connection to a local church.

Those who are interested in our support group are encouraged to contact the MCC BC office (604) 850-6639 or 1-888-622-6337.

Speaking at Churches

A MCC staff person is available to speak at Churches, to Sunday School classes, and Care groups to provide education on HIV/AIDS and the conditions associated with being positive. This presentation provides information on how to respond to those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS through practical means (emotional support, connecting to resources, and advocacy). Those affected are usually family and friends who provide support and care to a person living with HIV/AIDS.

Educational Resources

The HIV/AIDS program is interested in working with churches and individuals that want to provide support to people living with HIV/AIDS. A local pastor expressed the value and need for churches to learn about AIDS, and said he was "moved to tears" when he read HIV/AIDS A Christian Response to AIDS. He asked many questions about HIV/AIDS and was pleased that there was a Christian organization providing support and programs for those affected.

HIV/AIDS Reports

We have completed the Fraser East HIV/AIDS & Hep C Clinic Study. The goal of this study is to increase access to medical and related services for people with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C in the Fraser East (Abbotsford to Boston Bar) health region, and surrounding communities. Fraser Health is currently reviewing a business plan for this clinic.

The Mission-Abbotsford HIV/AIDS Needs Assessment report provides findings on the local gaps in services and needs of persons living with HIV/AIDS. More importantly it reports on the HIV/AIDS February 1st Forum where community agencies and individuals developed possible solutions and next steps to address the issues.
