(Photo by Matthew Tomm) Bangladesh Cyclone Disaster ResponseMillions were affected when Cyclone Sidr tore into Bangladesh’s southwestern coast on November 15, 2007. Powerful winds swept in from the Bay of Bengal creating a surge of water that rolled up rivers and streams, deep into the countryside. It was the worst cyclone in more than a decade. An estimated 3,400 people died. Hundreds of thousands of people are homeless, left with nothing but what they could carry as they fled to the safety of shelters. Crops were destroyed and livestock swept away. MCC workers report the scale of the devastation in the southern Bangladeshi districts of Bagerhat and Pirojpur is enormous and people are desperate for assistance MCC Responds. Provides $500,000Food — MCC, through the Canadian Food Grains Bank, will help provide food for 10,000 families for one month. More families are likely to receive food as MCC Bangladesh establishes additional distribution channels. Housing — MCC is working with other groups to build 1,250 houses for families who lost their homes.
