Egypt
About EgyptWhile infection rates remain low, the need for education and infection control is still present. Voluntary counseling and testing centers have recently opened, and groups with a higher risk of infection — such as refugees and street children — are being targeted through education and care efforts.
MCC Supports:Council of Services and Development — Synod of the Nile (CSD)While the HIV prevalence rate in Egypt is low, the Council of Services and Development (a program of the Coptic Orthodox church) recognizes that a low prevalence rate does not imply a low risk, especially for youth. A number of factors — such as unemployment, poverty, poor access to health care, intravenous drug use, and risky sexual behavior — put both youth and adults at risk of HIV infection. Through this program, the church will provide education about HIV/AIDS to 4,500 people. $6 Cdn./$5 U.S. provides an HIV/AIDS education manual for one teacher. $435 Cdn./$382 U.S. covers the cost of a seminar for 80 couples on HIV/AIDS education for themselves and their children. If contributions to a project exceed the amount needed, MCC will use the donations to support similar projects.
Ekhlas Coptic Organization for Development (ECOD)The Ekhlas Coptic Organization for Development (ECOD) is a development and technical assistance agency operating in the rural El-Fashr community. With an increase in HIV infection rates, ECOD recognized an opportunity for community education. There is particular concern for the many men that leave their homes to work in the travel industry in resort towns, as well as for their wives. MCC supports a series of awareness raising workshops for men, women, boys, girls, and health workers. Those trained are providing on-going support to HIV/AIDS programs in their community. $145 Cdn./$127 U.S. covers the cost of 100 educational brochures. $186 Cdn./$163 U.S. provides HIV/AIDS training for students in one boys secondary school. If contributions to a project exceed the amount needed, MCC will use the donations to support similar projects. |
