About Cambodia

Cambodia's HIV infection rate is 2.6 percent in adults. Rural villages have few resources to help them learn about AIDS and care for people who are infected.

MCC Supports:

Dhammayietra — Mongkol Borei (DYMB)

DYMB walks with those who are suffering with AIDS in Cambodia to promote peace within individuals, families and communities. Due to its border location and because it remained at war until 1998, the province has an especially high number of people at risk for AIDS. As soldiers, many men frequented commercial sex workers before the days of AIDS education. Today, a high number of people, especially men, migrate to Thailand and/or border towns seeking work. DYMB serves more than 150 villages. The program specializes in care for those dying at home. With the advent of a government anti-retroviral drug program, caregivers play an important role in referring patients to hospitals for treatment and providing support and follow-up to ensure that patients are responding well to the medications. Staff members work in teams of two within a geographic area. At least one team member has a medical background, so that questions about medical referrals can be answered quickly.

$6 Cdn./$5 U.S. is the average cost of a visit to a patient.

$173 Cdn./$137 U.S. per week covers staff transportation costs.
