Bangladesh
About BangladeshBecause of the low HIV prevalence rate in the country, there is a lack of urgency when it comes to education and prevention efforts. Programs aimed at high risk groups such as injecting drug users and commercial sex workers have contributed to the feeling that the general public is not at risk of HIV infection.
MCC Supports:MCC PARE PartnersWhile the HIV infection rates in Bangladesh are relatively low, the prevalence of other sexually transmitted diseases signals the vulnerability of the country to an HIV epidemic. Through the secondment of an MCC volunteer and work with the MCC PARE program, an established food security program, MCC is working in nine villages to provide HIV/AIDS education. The project will train 400 peer educators this year, who will then provide education to at least 10,000 people in their communities. If contributions to a project exceed the amount needed, MCC will use the donations to support similar projects. |
