Family Violence

by SP

Last night, I heard cats fighting. It woke me up. One time when cats were fighting out back, Daddy sprayed them with the hose. They ran away so fast! Daddy and I laughed.

I have fights sometimes. Like with my sister. One time she was making fun of me. I got so mad! Then she laughed at me. It made me feel mean inside. I said, "I'll never speak to you again! Not for the whole day!" Julie said, "I don't care." I missed her. I said, "Hey Julie, want to ride bikes?" She said, "Ha ha, said you'd never speak to me!" I felt mad all over again.

Once I bit my baby sister Suzie. She kept getting in the way of the jump rope. I bit her on the leg. She screamed and screamed. My mom sure was mad.

Sometimes mommy and daddy fight. That's scary. I try not to listen when they fight. Sometimes I hear anyway. "Shh!" Mommy says. "You'll wake the kids!" "I don't care if I wake the kids!" Daddy says. Julie crawls in bed with me sometimes and puts her head under the pillow.

Once I saw dad kick my mom. Right in the butt. It made my stomach feel funny. I wish I didn't see it. I told Julie he kicked her. She covered up her ears. Julie said she'd like to spray Mommy and Daddy with a hose when they fight!

One time when mommy and daddy were having a fight, we got some blankets. We made a tent in our room. Julie got some crackers. I got Suzie out of her playpen. We all went in the tent. I was just a little bit dark. Julie said, "Will mom call the police? Will dad go away?" "Will we go to Grandma's like when Suzie was born?" Julie asked so many questions. "I don't know!" I said "I don't know. I don't know."

Julie said, "Don't yell at me!"

Then mom came upstairs. She came in the tent with us. Mom's eyes were all red. She held on to me and Julie and Suzie. She said, I don't have answers right now. I only know I will always love you and always take care of you." She hugged us for a long, long time in that tent.
