Prevention Tips

Those who behave abusively often try to isolate their victims. Seniors who have a network of regular contacts are less vulnerable.

  • Remain Independent

Remain independent as long as possible. Men may need to learn self-care tasks such as shopping cooking and cleaning.

  • Be Careful

Be careful about bequeathing property to relatives on a promise to "look after you".

  • Deposit Income Directly into Bank Accounts

Deposit regular income such as pensions directly into bank accounts through the Automatic Deposit plan. Applications are available at banks.

  • Exercise Great Care

Exercise great care when signing legal documents. A trusted person (lawyer, notary) should always read them before signing.

  • Wills

Wills should be revised with a lawyer before retirement and prior to second marriages.

  • List Assets

List all assets and regularly check the inventory.

  • Encourage

Encourage any troubled younger relative to live independently. Finances may be given to enable that to happen.

  • Select a Concerned Family Physician

It is often preferable to find one younger than the senior.
