Day of the Child in Mexicoby Mary Friesen, MCC Canada April 30th is the official Day of the Child in Mexico and this year several former street children spoke to officials of the Mexican government. The children explained that they did not benefit by the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child when the law enforcement officers, who were supposed to protect them, would beat up on them. A Day of the Child has been designated in many countries with a vision to raise awareness of child abuse and to promote healing for victims and survivors of child abuse. Adults are expected to protect children from violence or abuse, yet many children live in constant fear and anxiety. The Day of the Child is a reminder to parents and other caregivers that children need protection from all forms of abuse, such as physical violence, neglect, public humiliation or sexual harassment.
